Rosarita and sterling silver etched locket

$225.00

Locket is set with rosarita, a slag glass that is a by-product resulting from the refining of sand containing gold in open smelting, a process used in Alaska until the 1960-1970's. This locket is made of sterling silver and is etched with images related to the processing of gold in Alaska that resulted in the formation of rosarita.

The front of the locket is etched with US geological survey elevation maps of Nome, Alaska. Nome is located on the Seward peninsula on the Bering Sea. The posterior is etched with a photo of the sand dreding machine from the Library of Congress of Dredge #5 in the Hammon Consolidated Gold Fields in Nome.

The locket measures 1 1/8 x 1 1/8. The opening is hollow with a ring that can hold a photo. It hangs from an 18 inch chain with a hand fabricated clasp.
